Jose Maria Morelos was born in Valladolid (Michoacan) on September 30, 1765. His parents were José Manuel Morelos and Juana Pérez Pavón.

He studied at the Seminary of Valladolid and graduated in Arts at the Royal and Pontifical University of Mexico. From 1798 he was priest of several towns in Michoacan.

In 1810 he joined the ranks of Miguel Hidalgo, who appointed him head of the insurgents in southern Mexico, and charged him to take Acapulco. After the death of Hidalgo (1811), Morelos conquered most part of the south and center of the country. In 1812, he took Oaxaca.

He also organized the Congress of Anahuac, which approved the Liberal Constitution of Apatzingan in 1814. However, the Creoles were denied help, and supported the absolutist restoration of King Ferdinand VII and the bloody repression of the Viceroy Felix Maria Calleja. After several military setbacks, Morelos was captured in November 1815. He was convicted of heresy and treason. He was shot on December 22, 1815.
